Low Fat Dairy

Dairy products provide the majority of the calcium we get from our food. Calcium is important for bone health. Calcium helps build strong bones and prevents bone loss as we get older. Other important nutrients in the dairy group include potassium, vitamin D, and protein.

Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy foods for you and your family. Low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurt, and cheese have all the important nutrients of full-fat dairy foods with less fat.

What Kind of Milk?

Infants less than 12 months old only need breastmilk or iron-fortified infant formula.

Children 12-24 months typically drink whole milk. The fat in whole milk is important for their brain development at this young age.

Children older than 2 years can drink low-fat or fat-free milk along with the rest of the family.
